Crispy Fried Pink Oyster Mushrooms AKA “Vegan Fried Chicken”
Ingredients:
- 1 pound fresh pink oyster mushrooms
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions:
- Prepare the Mushrooms:
- Clean the mushrooms gently with a damp paper towel to remove any dirt or debris.
- Cut the mushrooms into bite-sized pieces.
- Create the Batter:
- In a shallow dish, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
- In another shallow dish, beat the egg.
- In a third shallow dish, place the breadcrumbs.
- Coat the Mushrooms:
- Dredge the mushroom pieces in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
- Dip the floured mushrooms into the beaten egg.
- Roll the egg-coated mushrooms in the breadcrumbs, ensuring they are fully coated.
- Fry the Mushrooms:
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
- Carefully add a few mushrooms to the hot oil, being cautious of oil splatters.
- Fry the mushrooms for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the fried mushrooms from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- Serve:
- Serve the hot, crispy mushrooms immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or a spicy aioli.
Tips:
- For extra flavor, you can add other spices to the flour mixture, such as cayenne pepper or chili powder.
- Be careful when handling hot oil.
- For a healthier option, consider baking the mushrooms instead of frying them.
